FORENSIC TOXICOLOGY FOR ATTORNEYS
ALCOHOL, DRUGS, AND HOW TO BETTER USE AN EXPERT
A DAY COURSE IN FORENSIC TOXICOLOGY FOR ATTORNEYS

OBJECTIVE: This course provides practicing attorneys with an intensive one-day course in forensic laboratory toxicology. The course focuses on several relevant topics for the litigator: (a) urine analysis alcohol and drug testing; (b) blood and breath alcohol testing; (c) hair drug testing; (d) National Academy of Sciences reports; (e) laboratory specimen chain of custody procedures and litigation package materials; (f) case law; (g) discovery requests and trial preparation. The course involves practical review of laboratory testing result reports or litigation packages from alcohol and drug cases. Drug and alcohol metabolisms and effects on the human system will be explained. The course involves review of forensic urine analysis drug tests, blood alcohol results, and breath alcohol results. Widmark calculations, micro-method tests designed to detect blood alcohol levels, will be discussed. Different approaches to drug testing and analytical techniques, including immunoassays, thin layer chromatography, gas chromatography, gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GCMS), and infrared breath machines, will be discussed. Upon completing the course, participating attorneys will possess practical knowledge and experience for: (a) reviewing scientific data contained in laboratory testing result reports and litigation packages; (b) requesting relevant discovery information from the laboratory and opposing counsel; (c) understanding different analytical instruments and techniques utilized in the forensic laboratory. The expert witness portion of the course focuses on how to utilize an expert witness and prepare cross-examination in the courtroom effectively. Practical cases including Melendez-Diaz, Bullcoming, and Britt, will be discussed to supplement theoretical concepts and facilitate classroom learning.

FEE: The course enrollment fee for attorneys for the intensive, one-day course in forensic toxicology for attorneys is Four Hundred Dollars and Zero Cents ($400.00), excluding accommodation and meals. The fee covers course materials and course refreshment costs.

FACULTY: Course instruction will be provided by toxicologist Dr. John Vasiliades, PhD. Dr. Vasiliades possesses over thirty eight (38) years of experience in clinical and forensic toxicology, and has testified or provided litigation support in over one thousand five hundred (1500) criminal and civil cases.
