OBJECTIVE: This course provides practicing attorneys an intensive, one (1) day course in forensic laboratory toxicology. The course involves practical review of laboratory test result reports or litigation packages from Driving While Intoxicated "DWI" or Driving Under the Influence "DUI" cases, drug and alcohol metabolism, and interpreting test results. The workshop involves review of forensic urine analysis "UA" drug tests, blood alcohol results, and breath alcohol results. Widmark calculations, micro-method tests designed to detect blood alcohol levels, will be discussed. Different approaches to drug testing and analytical techniques, including immunoassays "IMS," thin layer chromatography "TLC," gas chromatography "GC," gas chromatography, mass spectrometry "GCMS," and infrared breath machines, will be discussed. Upon course completion, participating attorneys will possess practical knowledge and experience for (a) reviewing scientific data contained in laboratory test result reports or litigation packages, (b) requesting relevant information from opposing counsel, and (c) understanding different analytical instruments and techniques utilized in the forensic laboratory. The expert witness portion of the course focuses on how to utilize an expert witness and prepare cross examination in the court room effectively. Practical cases will be discussed to supplement theoretical concepts and facilitate classroom learning.
