OBJECTIVE: This course provides individuals holding a tertiary degree in natural or clinical sciences an intense three (3) day course in clinical and forensic laboratory toxicology. The workshop involves practical laboratory procedures and lectures. Analytical procedures will be performed by every course participant. The introductory course is oriented towards individuals or medical technologists possessing a Bachelor of Arts "B.A." or Bachelor of Science "B.S." degree in hard science with little or no experience in laboratory toxicology. The intermediate and advanced courses are oriented towards individuals possessing laboratory experience who desire training in toxicology and serving as court room experts. The intensive, three (3) day course guides the participant through a systematic approach to drug testing. Analytical techniques, including immunoassays "IMS," thin layer chromatography "TLC," gas chromatography "GC," and gas chromatography, mass spectrometry "GCMS," will be illustrated and discussed. Upon course completion, the student will possess practical experience with extraction, GC, GCMS, IMS, TLC, and spot tests. The court room expert portion of the course focuses on how to provide expert testimony effectively. Practical cases will be discussed to supplement theoretical concepts and facilitate classroom learning.
